I am an oil painter, a watercolor painter, an illustrator, and a book-maker. I am not limited to only these titles, but these four are the main parts of my artistic identity.
My oil paintings are an exploration of color and light, especially in their relationship to skin in portraits. They are a balance between simplicity and intricateness. Recently, I have been enjoying incorporating a collaged or scrapbooked feeling to my paintings.
My watercolor paintings, which are the most recent addition to my practice, have been an expression of appreciation for the natural world. I use photographs I have taken outside, both at home and during my travels, and recreate them with an emphasis on softness and simplicity.
My drawings and illustrations are the oldest part of my artistic identity. They make up the foundation of my practice. I experiment drawing in my sketchbooks with various materials and of different subject matters; sometimes drawing from life, from photographs, or from my imagination.
My book-making practice combines my love of drawing in sketchbooks, scrapbooking, and preserving sentimental or funny parts of my life. There is something so cozy and precious about an artist book, and something so interesting about having the freedom of creating art in a different format.
Within all of my art-making processes, my style shifts. At times I wonder if I will ever land on my own “signature style”, or if that sort of thing truly matters anyway. Right now, I am enjoying being limitless.
